Variable System Solutions Based on Blue Diode Lasers

Contacting copper windings in electric motors, additive manufacturing of electronic components, recycling-oriented separation of solder connections: laser solutions for these and related challenges in the field of copper material processing will be presented by diode laser specialist Laserline at Coiltech 2025 in Augsburg, Germany.

Mülheim-Kärlich, February 19, 2025 Laser solutions for the manufacturing and recycling of copper-based electronic components – this is the focus of Laserline’s appearance at Coiltech Deutschland 2025 (March 26–27 in Augsburg, Booth 5-H22). The key topics are the contacting of copper windings in electric motors, additive manufacturing of electronic components and recycling-oriented separation of solder connections. In addition, the industrial laser specialist will provide information on many possibilities for copper material processing using blue diode lasers.

Wire Stripping and Contact Welding of Copper Windings

For electrical contacting – for example, of coils in electric motors – Laserline presents system solutions for the preparatory stripping in the joining area (wire stripping) as well as the subsequent laser welding of contacts (wire/poles connection). Both solutions are based on blue diode lasers with a wavelength of approximately 445 nm and are supported by high-precision beam-shaping optics. The excellent absorption of blue laser radiation in copper enables effective and material-friendly processing of even very fine wires in these system configurations. Depending on the application, the beam sources operate at power levels between 400 W and 6,000 W, with beam qualities between ≤4 and 60 mm∙mrad. In terms of beam shaping, laser scanners are used for stripping, while welding utilizes either scanners or fixed optics (OTS-5) with a round spot.

Additive Manufacturing of Copper-based Electronic Components

Another processing option for electronic components presented at the booth is the new, highly brilliant blue laser with WBC technology. With a beam quality of ≤ 4 mm∙mrad and output powers of 400 or 800 watts, the LDFblue 400-wbc and LDFblue 800-wbc diode lasers enable the additive manufacturing of copper-based electronic components using Laser Powder Bed Fusion in robust and spatter-free processes. They combine exceptional beam quality with robust and industry-proven system architecture.

Recycling-oriented Separation of Soldered Connections

With blue diode lasers in combination with flexibly adjustable OTZ zoom optics, Laserline additionally showcases system configurations for the heat-based separation of soldered copper connections, as used for the recycling of copper busbars or other copper-based electronic components. The system solutions can be used for the separation of soldered and brazed connections (de-soldering or de-brazing); the associated zoom optics enable large-area, individually adaptable spots with a homogeneous intensity profile (top-hat), which are very well suited for the uniform heating of the joining zones.

Presentation on Blue Diode Lasers as a Multitool for Copper Processing

Laserline’s appearance at the trade show will be complemented by a presentation titled “Blue Diode Lasers: A Multitool for Processing of Copper.” Dr.-Ing. Luisa-Marie Schäfer-Heine, product expert for blue diode lasers at Laserline, will explain many possible applications of blue diode lasers in industrial copper material processing.
